Beyond Time: How Luxury Watchmakers Turn Products Into Empires

Imagine two watches that both tell the same time. One costs a few thousand rupees, while another can cost more than a luxury car. Both perform the same basic function, yet their prices, reputations, and the people who desire them are worlds apart. What exactly are customers paying for?

The luxury watch industry offers an interesting answer: a product’s value is not determined by its function alone. Engineering, craftsmanship, identity, heritage, and the story behind a brand can transform an ordinary object into something people aspire to own. Few brands demonstrate this better than Rolex, Audemars Piguet, and Richard Mille. Although they compete in the same broad market, each has followed a different path to success.

Rolex: Building Trust Before Selling Luxury

When Hans Wilsdorf established his watch business in London in 1905, wristwatches had yet to earn the same reputation for precision and reliability as pocket watches. Instead of treating the wristwatch merely as a fashion accessory, Wilsdorf saw an opportunity to make it dependable enough for everyday life.

In 1926, Rolex introduced the Oyster, a waterproof wristwatch that helped establish the company’s reputation. A year later, Mercedes Gleitze wore a Rolex Oyster during her English Channel swim. Rolex used the event to demonstrate the watch’s reliability to the public. This was more than publicity; it connected the product to a real-world achievement.

That strategy reveals an important business lesson: trust becomes a competitive advantage when a company consistently proves its promises. Rolex built its identity around reliability, recognisable designs, precision, and associations with achievement. Over time, the name itself became a powerful signal of status and quality.

Rolex did not become influential simply by making expensive watches. It developed a reputation that customers could recognise across generations. For businesses, this shows why consistent quality and credible marketing can be more valuable in the long run than chasing every new trend.

Audemars Piguet: Selling Steel at the Price of Gold

By the early 1970s, luxury watchmaking was strongly associated with precious metals and traditional designs. Audemars Piguet chose a different direction.

In 1972, the company introduced the Royal Oak, designed by Gérald Genta. Its stainless-steel construction, octagonal bezel, exposed screws, and integrated bracelet challenged conventional ideas about what an expensive watch should look like. The watch was also priced boldly for a steel model, making the proposition even more controversial.

The decision was risky. Why would customers pay a premium for steel when gold was traditionally associated with luxury? Yet the Royal Oak offered something beyond its material: distinctive design, painstaking finishing, and a strong identity. What initially challenged expectations eventually became one of the defining designs in high-end watchmaking.

Audemars Piguet’s story demonstrates the commercial power of differentiation. Instead of competing only on traditional definitions of luxury, the company helped establish a new category: the high-end luxury sports watch.

The lesson extends far beyond watches. A business does not always need to follow what customers already expect. Sometimes, the bigger opportunity lies in creating a product that changes what customers consider desirable.

Richard Mille: The Challenger That Refused to Blend In

Unlike Rolex and Audemars Piguet, Richard Mille entered the luxury watch market much more recently. The brand launched its first watch, the RM 001 Tourbillon, in 2001. It entered an industry already dominated by established names, centuries of craftsmanship, and deeply rooted traditions.

Rather than imitate its competitors, Richard Mille pursued a distinctive combination of technical experimentation, unconventional architecture, advanced materials, and bold design. Its tonneau-shaped cases and highly visible mechanical components helped its watches stand apart from more traditional luxury timepieces.

The brand also positioned its products at exceptionally high prices from the beginning. This was not a strategy for attracting the largest possible audience. It was a deliberate attempt to establish a product at the extreme premium end of the market, supported by engineering ambitions, specialist craftsmanship, and a recognisable design language.

Richard Mille illustrates how a newcomer can compete without having centuries of history behind it. A business can build its own category by being unmistakably different, provided that its product and brand promise support that difference.

The lesson is not that high prices automatically create prestige. A high price without a convincing reason can simply drive customers away. Richard Mille’s approach combines premium positioning with a product identity designed to justify its place in the market.

Three Brands, Three Business Strategies

Although these companies sell luxury watches, their stories reveal three distinct approaches to building a business.

Brand	Core strategy	Business lesson
Rolex	Reliability and heritage	Earn trust consistently
Audemars Piguet	Unconventional design	Challenge established expectations
Richard Mille	Differentiation and premium positioning	Give customers a reason to choose you

Their success also shows why luxury cannot be reduced to one formula. Rolex demonstrates the power of long-term credibility, Audemars Piguet shows how a bold product can redefine a category, and Richard Mille demonstrates how a newcomer can create a distinct identity in a mature industry.

The Business Behind the Watch

Luxury watchmaking is not only about manufacturing a precise instrument. It also involves managing reputation, developing distinctive products, communicating value, maintaining craftsmanship, and creating a brand identity that customers remember.

These companies operate in different ways, but each understands that customers are buying more than the ability to tell time. They are buying a combination of product quality, design, heritage, identity, and personal meaning.

This does not mean every luxury watch is a good financial investment, or that high prices guarantee future resale value. Nor does it mean every business should imitate luxury pricing. The deeper lesson is that a company must understand what makes its offering valuable to its intended customers and then deliver on that promise.

For an entrepreneur, the question is not simply, “How do I sell an expensive product?” It is, “How do I build a product and a reputation that customers have a compelling reason to choose?”

Rolex built trust. Audemars Piguet challenged convention. Richard Mille pursued a different vision of modern watchmaking.

Different paths, one powerful principle: lasting business value comes from giving people a reason to believe in, recognise, and desire what you create.

The Motorola Comeback: How a Fallen Giant Found Its Way Back

There was a time when Motorola didn’t follow the mobile-phone industry. It helped create it.

From the first commercial portable cellular phones to the iconic Razr, Motorola was one of the biggest names in mobile technology. But when smartphones changed the rules, the company that had once defined the phone suddenly found itself struggling to keep up.

This is the story of how Motorola nearly lost its place—and how it slowly built its way back.

Part I — From Pioneer to Problem

Motorola had spent decades building its reputation around innovation. It created the world’s first commercial portable cellular phone and became one of the defining names of the mobile era.

Then the smartphone arrived.

Apple’s iPhone and a rapidly expanding Android ecosystem changed what consumers expected from a phone. Motorola’s historic strengths in hardware and iconic design were no longer enough. The market was moving faster, and Motorola struggled to find a consistent position in it.

The company was eventually split into Motorola Solutions and Motorola Mobility in 2011. Google acquired Motorola Mobility in 2012 for about $12.5 billion, largely because of its valuable patent portfolio and its potential role in the Android ecosystem.

But Google soon realized that running a smartphone hardware business was not its core strength.

In 2014, Google agreed to sell Motorola Mobility to Lenovo for approximately $2.91 billion.

On paper, it looked like the end of an era.

But Motorola wasn’t finished.

---

Part II — The Phone That Changed the Strategy

Before Lenovo’s acquisition was completed, Motorola had already begun changing direction.

Instead of trying to compete everywhere with a huge catalogue of phones, the company focused on building fewer products that offered strong value.

Then came the Moto G.

Launched in 2013, the Moto G was priced at just $179 for its 8GB unlocked version in the United States. For that price, it offered a quad-core Snapdragon processor, a 4.5-inch HD display and a clean Android experience.

The strategy was simple:

Don’t make the cheapest phone. Make the phone that feels surprisingly good for its price.

That was a powerful idea.

At a time when affordable smartphones often meant accepting poor performance, Motorola made value its competitive advantage.

Google itself highlighted the Moto G and Moto X as evidence that Motorola had begun reinventing itself before the Lenovo deal.

The Moto G eventually became more than a single successful product. It became a product family.

According to Motorola, the Moto G family passed 200 million units sold worldwide by its tenth anniversary.

Motorola had found something it had been missing:

A reason for people to choose the brand again.

---

Part III — Lenovo Gives the Comeback Scale

When Lenovo completed its acquisition of Motorola Mobility in October 2014, it wasn’t simply buying an old name.

It was buying an iconic brand, engineering talent, carrier relationships and a global smartphone business.

The challenge was turning those assets into a sustainable business.

Lenovo simplified the product portfolio, worked to make the mobile business leaner, and gave Motorola a clearer role in designing and developing smartphones.

The combination was important.

Motorola brought the brand and product identity.

Lenovo brought scale, manufacturing expertise, supply-chain strength and global reach.

That combination allowed Motorola to compete again—not by trying to become Apple or Samsung, but by finding spaces where its strengths mattered.

The company continued expanding the Moto G family, experimented with premium products and modular concepts, and eventually returned to the high-end market with products such as the Razr foldables.

The Razr was particularly significant.

Motorola took a phone design that had once defined an entire generation and transformed it into a modern foldable smartphone.

It wasn’t simply nostalgia.

It was using an old brand asset to create a new product category.

And the comeback is still visible in the numbers.

Lenovo reported that Motorola’s smartphone revenue reached its highest level since the acquisition in fiscal year 2024/25, with 27% year-on-year growth. Motorola has also continued expanding in Asia-Pacific and Europe, while maintaining strong positions in North and Latin America.

---

The Real Motorola Comeback

Motorola’s story isn’t really about one phone saving a company.

It is about changing the business model around the brand.

The company that once competed primarily through technological innovation learned to compete through value, simplicity, brand recognition and strategic positioning.

Its comeback followed a surprisingly entrepreneurial formula:

Lose relevance → Identify what customers still value → Simplify → Build a strong product → Find the right business partner → Scale

Motorola didn’t become the company it was in the 2000s again.

It became something different.

And perhaps that is the most important lesson.

A comeback doesn’t always mean returning to the past.

Sometimes it means taking what people remember about you, combining it with what the market wants today, and building something new.

Motorola didn’t revive its past. It learned how to use it.

The Rivet That Built Levi’s

What if one of the world’s most famous fashion products started with a simple problem?

Workers kept tearing their trousers.

In the 1870s, hard labour meant hard-wearing clothes. Pockets and seams often failed under heavy use. A Nevada tailor named Jacob W. Davis saw an opportunity to fix the problem.

And his solution was tiny.

A copper rivet.

Part 1 — When the Stitch Failed

Jacob Davis was a tailor in Reno, Nevada. His customers needed trousers that could survive demanding work.

Instead of simply stitching the weak points again, Davis reinforced them with metal rivets.

The result was stronger trousers that could handle much more stress.

Demand quickly grew.

But Davis now had another problem:

He needed to protect and scale his invention.

---

Part 2 — The Tailor Who Thought Like an Entrepreneur

Davis understood that a good invention could easily be copied.

So he decided to patent his method.

But there was a catch—he didn’t have enough money to pursue the patent himself.

In 1872, he wrote to businessman Levi Strauss, asking him to help finance the patent. Davis proposed sharing the rights to the invention.

Strauss agreed.

On May 20, 1873, U.S. Patent No. 139,121 was granted for Davis’s method of reinforcing pocket openings with metal rivets.

The famous “seven rivets” wasn’t the invention itself. The real breakthrough was the idea of reinforcing the points where trousers were most likely to fail.

---

Part 3 — From a Rivet to a Legacy

Davis had the invention.

Strauss had the commercial network.

Together, they turned a tailor’s solution into a scalable business.

Levi Strauss & Co. had already been established in 1853, while the riveted garment patent came in 1873.

The trousers began as practical workwear. Over time, the product evolved from workwear → everyday clothing → fashion → global culture.

The original patent eventually expired. Competitors entered the market.

But Levi’s had something more powerful than a patent:

A brand.

The famous Two Horse trademark, the 501 name, manufacturing expertise and distribution helped turn a practical invention into a lasting global business.

Today, Levi Strauss & Co. is 173 years old, not 200.

And the original rivet patent is 153 years old.

A tiny piece of copper didn’t just strengthen a pair of trousers.

It helped demonstrate one of entrepreneurship’s oldest lessons:

Find a real problem. Build a better solution. Protect it. Find the right partner. Then scale it.

Sometimes, an entire industry can begin with something as small as a rivet.

Entrepreneurship in Formula 1: Where Speed Meets Business

When we think about Formula 1, we usually think about speed, drivers, pit stops, and championship battles.

But behind every car on the grid is something much bigger: a business.

Formula 1 is one of the clearest examples of how entrepreneurship works when innovation, competition, risk, branding, and money come together.

A modern F1 team isn’t simply trying to build the fastest car. It has to attract sponsors, manage hundreds of employees, develop technology, build a global brand, and make thousands of decisions where a fraction of a second can determine success.

The F1 Team as a Startup

At its core, entrepreneurship is about turning limited resources into something valuable.

An F1 team operates under exactly this pressure.

Teams have limited time, financial constraints, engineering resources, manufacturing capacity, and personnel. They must decide where those resources will create the greatest performance advantage.

Should the team invest more in aerodynamics?

Should it improve its power unit?

Should it develop a new manufacturing process?

Should it spend resources on simulation and data analysis?

Every decision has an opportunity cost.

This is surprisingly similar to a startup.

A startup cannot build everything at once. It has to identify its most important problem, allocate its resources intelligently, test ideas, learn from failures, and iterate.

An F1 car follows the same philosophy—except the feedback arrives at nearly 300 km/h.

Innovation Under Pressure

Formula 1 has always been a laboratory for experimentation.

Engineers continuously search for improvements in aerodynamics, materials, energy recovery, simulation, manufacturing, and vehicle dynamics.

The important entrepreneurial lesson isn’t simply that F1 creates innovative technology.

It is that innovation happens because there is a competitive reason to innovate.

When multiple teams are trying to solve the same problem better than their competitors, even a tiny improvement can become valuable.

This creates an environment where teams constantly ask:

“Can we do this differently?”

That question is at the heart of entrepreneurship.

Failure Is Part of the Process

Not every F1 upgrade works.

A new aerodynamic component may produce less performance than expected. A strategy may fail. A technical concept may look promising in simulation but behave differently on track.

For an entrepreneur, this is an important lesson.

Failure isn’t necessarily evidence that an idea was useless.

It can be evidence that the original assumption was wrong.

The important part is what happens next.

Teams collect data, analyse the result, identify the problem, and iterate.

That cycle looks remarkably similar to the startup loop:

Build → Test → Measure → Learn → Improve

The faster an organization can complete this cycle, the faster it can improve.

The Business of Sponsorship

An F1 car is also a moving advertising platform.

Sponsors don’t simply pay for a logo on a car. They are buying access to a global audience, brand association, hospitality opportunities, digital content, and partnerships.

This creates another entrepreneurial lesson:

A product can create value beyond its primary function.

An F1 team provides racing entertainment, but it can also provide:

• Global brand exposure
• Corporate networking
• Hospitality experiences
• Technology partnerships
• Content opportunities
• Merchandise
• Licensing
• Data and technical collaboration

Entrepreneurs constantly look for these additional sources of value.

Branding: More Than a Logo

Some of the world’s most recognizable brands have become closely associated with Formula 1.

The sport demonstrates how powerful storytelling can be.

People don’t just follow machines. They follow teams, drivers, rivalries, personalities, victories, failures, and stories.

This is important for startups.

A technically excellent product isn’t automatically a successful brand.

Customers need a reason to care.

The strongest companies often combine technology with a compelling story.

F1 does this exceptionally well.

Technology as a Competitive Advantage

Modern F1 teams depend heavily on data.

Sensors, simulations, telemetry, computational models, manufacturing systems, and real-time analysis all contribute to decision-making.

But technology itself isn’t the advantage.

The advantage comes from how effectively the organization uses technology to make decisions.

This is another lesson entrepreneurs can apply.

Having access to sophisticated tools doesn’t guarantee success.

The real competitive advantage comes from combining:

Technology + People + Process + Decision Making

A smaller company with a better process can sometimes outperform a larger company with more resources.

The Ecosystem Behind the Car

An F1 team doesn’t operate alone.

Behind the car is an enormous network of suppliers, engineers, manufacturers, software developers, logistics companies, sponsors, broadcasters, media organizations, and technology partners.

This resembles the modern startup ecosystem.

A successful startup rarely builds everything internally.

It uses partnerships, suppliers, platforms, investors, communities, and other organizations to extend its capabilities.

F1 demonstrates the same principle at an enormous scale.

What Entrepreneurs Can Learn From F1

Formula 1 offers several lessons that extend far beyond motorsport.

1. Speed of iteration matters

You don’t need to get everything right on the first attempt.

You need to learn quickly.

2. Constraints can encourage innovation

Limited resources force teams to prioritize.

Entrepreneurs face the same reality.

3. Small advantages compound

A tiny improvement in one area may combine with improvements elsewhere and create a significant overall advantage.

4. Data should support decisions

Data is valuable when it helps people make better decisions—not simply because there is a lot of it.

5. People matter as much as technology

A great idea requires talented people and effective collaboration to become reality.

6. Competition forces improvement

Strong competition pushes organizations to continuously question their assumptions.

7. A product needs a story

People connect with experiences, identities, and stories—not just specifications.

From the Track to the Startup World

Perhaps the biggest entrepreneurial lesson from Formula 1 is that success rarely comes from one breakthrough.

A championship-winning organization is built through hundreds of small improvements.

A better process.

A faster decision.

A smarter design.

A stronger partnership.

A more efficient manufacturing method.

A better understanding of the customer.

Individually, these improvements may seem insignificant.

Together, they can create a competitive advantage.

That is entrepreneurship in its simplest form:

Find an opportunity. Build something valuable. Learn from reality. Adapt faster than the competition.

Formula 1 just happens to do it at 300 kilometres per hour.
